Application
Aug. 16th, 2009 08:42 pmFull Canon Name: Nao Kanzaki
Canon: Liar Game; please note I am taking Nao from the first live action TV series. It lasted only 11 episodes, so there are only three rounds, whereas the manga has more than that. However, the basic premise is exactly the same.
Age: 22
In-Game Name: Nao Kanzaki
Gender: Female
Role in tenthtwilight: Guest
Appearance: Nao's overall appearance is best described as 'average'. She's of Japanese descent, weighs 47 kg (103 lbs), and is 162 cm tall (5'3"). Her hair is long, dark brown, and straight, reaching to the middle of her back. Her eyes are also dark brown, with thin lashes. Her skin is a pale color, and blemish-free. Her wardrobe is quite feminine; she's always in a long skirt and a blouse, usually paired with a sweater and a matching purse. She doesn't really like to dress in a fancy manner either, preferring plain, everyday clothes. She wears flat shoes, never heels, and she's never seen in pants, even jeans. Her posture is good, and she sits in a rather prim fashion, usually crossing her ankles with her hands in her lap.
Personality: The overwhelming personality trait Nao possesses is her honesty. She's tricked by children frequently, has almost fallen victim to frauds, and returns 100 yen coins to police stations. She tends to believe almost anything told to her, unless something proves her wrong otherwise. Because of this gullible personality, one would think Nao would be miserable, but in fact, it's just the opposite. She's happy the way she is, and always manages to keep smiling, no matter what happens to her. Due to the Liar Game, this trait has lessened, but only slightly.
Tying into her honesty, Nao truly believes in the goodness of those around her, no matter how much they deceive and trick her, and no matter how cruel they may be to her. If they are in a troublesome situation, Nao will want to help them out. This is proven at the end of the Revival Round; despite having been tricked by everyone at first, Nao not only gains the upper hand, but helps them all at the end. This was also especially true in round 3 of the Liar Game, where Nao wanted to help everyone get out of the game without debt, even Yokoya.
Another trait of Nao's is her decisive nature. It may take some outside influence for her to choose a path to take, but once she fully decides to do something, she sees it through no matter what. Whether it be seeking for a way to have a no-loss end to the Liar Game, or choosing to go after Akiyama even when he said he'd be fine on his own, Nao tends to be incredibly stubborn when she wants to be.
How she deals with an extreme situation has changed vastly from before the Liar Game. She used to cry often, including when she learned she was in a debt of 100 million yen when her teacher tricked her. However, due to her experiences in the game, she handles stress much better than before, and doesn't admit defeat as easily as she used to. Rather than cry, she grows frustrated, and becomes determined to solve the issue instead.
Strengths/Abilities: Her biggest strength, to be sure, is her honesty. The fact she is so honest ensures that almost every word that comes from her is truthful. Despite this, she can trick people, and be an actress when the time calls for it (though this is rare). She also has keen powers of observation, able to pick up on visual cues and traits and tell what a person is thinking.
Powers: Not Applicable
Weaknesses: As much as honesty is her asset, it's also Nao's Achilles Heel. Due to her naive and trusting nature, she's fooled easily (though not as easily as before the Liar Game) and easy to manipulate. She will believe what she sees unless someone else proves otherwise, even if that proof turns out to be a trick as well.
History/AU History: Nao Kanzaki was living a normal life, working and visiting her sick father in the hospital, when a black box appeared on her doorstep. Without opening the envelope on top of it, Nai opened the box instead, revealing 100 million yen, plus a videotape. Upon playing the tape, Nao realized that she had been entered into an event called the Liar Game Tournament, LGT for short. Since she opened the box and played the tape, she could no longer back out of it. The masked man on the screen explained that the goal of the round was to steal the money that another person held (and that meant her opponent would try and steal the money she had). Terrified, she took the box to the police, but they claimed they couldn't do anything about it, telling her to just ignore it. A couple of days later, she received news of her opponent, and was relieved to see it was a teacher she trusted in middle school. However, he didn't want to be in debt either, and easily tricked Nao, taking her money.
Desperate, Nao went to the police again, and though he still couldn't do anything, the policeman on duty revealed that a genius swindler named Shin'ichi Akiyama was being released from prison that day, and suggested she should talk to him. She went to him for help, but Akiyama naturally refused. However, she was persistent, even waiting in the same spot for him for almost a full day when he told her to wait for him, intending to ditch her. Nao's honest nature reminded him of his mother, who was also tricked into debt, and he agreed to help her after she promised him 50 million yen. When the deadline arrived, he successfully tricked her teacher and got Nao the money she needed to win. However, Nao gave her winnings to her teacher so he could buy his way out of the Liar Game, and Akiyama gave him his share as well.
The notice for the second round came along, and since Nao gave her money to her teacher to pay off his debt, she could not pay the 50 million drop out fee. Akiyama told her to ignore it, but the police officer who helped her earlier convinced Nao to go to the site of the second round and demand the runner of the game leave her alone. As it turned out, the officer was actually part of the LGT, and Nao was forced into playing the second round. Akiyama arrived at the very last minute, having followed Nao, and took the place of one of the players who didn't want to participate. Akiyama formed a team, and thanks to his plan, he paid off everyone's debts once he won. As a result, he didn't have enough afterward to drop out himself. He reassured Nao that he wanted to continue, and find out who was behind the LGT. After this, he lost contact with her.
Nao, driven by guilt, entered the Revival Round to get Akiyama out of debt. The game, where the person with the least votes lost, was quickly taken control over by Yuuji Fukunaga, a man who also tricked Nao in the second round. He succeeded to do so again, getting everyone else in the Revival Round to work with him and against Nao. Nao wasn't sure what to do till suddenly, Akiyama showed up. With his help, Nao tricked everyone and got 80 votes, more than enough for the 50 she needed to survive. As a result of her trickery, everyone else was below 50. Once Akiyama revealed himself, Fukunaga was furious and claimed Akiyama was not allowed to be there. However, the LGT hostess claimed that since Akiyama fell under Nao's "personal belongings", it was not against the rules. Nao won the game, and gained 1 billion yen as a result. However, she used 200 million to save the only contestant that was nice to her, then paid back the rest of the players their money, stating that they would all move on to the next round since they never won nor lost any money. It is at this point that Nao started to show more courage and was convinced there was a way to leave the Liar Game without any debt.
The third round, taking place in an abandoned airport, was called the Contraband Game, each player trying to smuggle money back and forth between two 'countries'. Nao and Akiyama, who were on the same team, were opposed by an intimidating man named Yokoya on the opposite team, who claimed to be psychic and knew what amount of money was in every case. However, it was revealed that he was working with someone on Nao's team, hence his knowledge. As the rounds passed, Nao convinced everyone but Akiyama and Yokoya to follow a plan where nobody would be in debt at the end of the round, allowing them to move on to the fourth round. Akiyama also dug into Yokoya, managing to put chinks in his cool-faced armor. In the end, Akiyama went with Nao's plan and saved Yokoya along like everyone else, and everyone moved on to round four.
A month after the third round ended, Nao had returned to her peaceful life, continuing to visit her father in the hospital. One day, Nao bumped into Akiyama while taking her father around the hospital in his wheelchair. Once she returned her father to his room, she and Akiyama took a walk outside, where she was fooled by a little boy. She asked Akiyama afterward if it was okay that she was so foolishly honest; he responded that there was nothing wrong with it, and they continued walking together.
Tenth Twilight AU: Soon after these events, Nao received a letter from a woman named Kyrie Ushiromiya, telling her that Akiyama was going to be coming to her family estate on the island of Rokkenjima. Kyrie stated that since she knew of Nao and Akiyama's partnership, she was inviting Nao as a guest, to allow her to spend time with her ally and friend. While Kyrie never stated the reason why Akiyama was going, and Nao got a feeling that maybe the Liar Game had something to do with it. She also realized that it could be a trap, but the fact Akiyama was in potential danger made it so she couldn't just leave it alone. Nao responded favorably to the invitation, and prepared to take a trip.
Reason for traveling to Rokkenjima: Invited by Kyrie-san as a guest due to Akiyama being hired by Krauss.
Can you and your character handle the graphic nature of this game? I definitely can; I've been in horror/suspense RPs in the past, plus I can watch my fair share of gore without flinching. Nao, while not being too comfortable with it at first, will eventually grow accustomed to it to the best of her ability, much like Battler did in the game.

Nao's flat shoes made soft sounds as she ran with the others outside. The kids had grown curious, and truthfully, Nao was as well. Everyone else had left so suddenly... Nao felt a little guilty for not staying with the smallest child, Maria, but from what she had seen, the girl was well taken care of by the television if nothing else. Comforted, Nao followed the children to what looked like a storage shed. "Was that always there?" Nao wondered quietly to herself, almost scolding herself for not noticing sooner. A woman dressed in purple spread out her arms, crying out for the children to not come any closer. Then Nao smelled it, that familiar, strong coppery scent hitting her nostrils.
And then she saw it.
Nao's eyes went wide, and she almost dropped her umbrella as her other hand came to her mouth, suppressing her dinner from the night before as she felt bile rise in the back of her throat. Nao couldn't believe what she was seeing: faces ripped to shreds as if they'd been little more than paper, heads busted open like a grotesque pinata. How many...? Nao counted six as she swallowed hard, slowly lowering her shaking hand from her mouth. The doctor was talking about how they died, but Nao barely heard him (though she probably should have listened). The gears in her mind began to spin as she remembered something from earlier.
The day before, Nao had left with the children once the adults of the Ushiromiya family had started to talk business with each other, and on the way, they paused by the large portrait of a woman named Beatrice. Nao listened as the legend was explained, about the gold, and how she was rumored to be a witch. Near the portrait was an epitaph, which Nao read along with the rest of the children. One line in particular was repeating in Nao's head right now:
"At the first twilight, you shall lift up as sacrifice the six chosen by the key."
She repeated the line silently to herself, and realized it couldn't be just a coincidence, could it? She quickly ran over the lines, each more chilling than the last, till one made her blood run cold. She whispered the words, so nobody else could hear. "At the ninth twilight, the Witch shall be revived and none shall be left alive." Her grip tightened on the umbrella as she finally looked back up, the children in varying degrees of distress as they saw their loved ones in a state of such disgrace. If it really was the work of the witch, Beatrice, then everything was decided already.
Everyone here... was going to die.
